Camera Trapping Resumes for 2024-25 Season

The tiger monitoring project using camera trapping has resumed as of November 18, 2024, nearly two months after being paused. The initial phase began on September 18, 2024, but operations were halted due to heavy flooding on September 28, 2024. The flooding damaged 12 cameras in the field sites and rendered the area unsuitable for camera placement until the floodwaters receded. Additionally, it took some time to procure new camera traps.

The cameras are now placed in Block One along the Rapti River in Kerunga Buffer Zone Community Forests, east of Meghauli. Eight camera trapping sites, each with two cameras, have been established. The cameras will remain in place for fifteen days before being moved to the next block. This rotation will continue until May 2025, covering the entire western buffer zone of Chitwan National Park.
Although the flooding posed significant challenges, damaging our cameras, we have successfully gathered new resources and are committed to completing the camera trapping as planned.
